The Life of Doc Anello
Doc Anello was born on September 8, 1927, in Newark, New Jersey — a city alive with the sounds of jazz, big band, and swing that would shape his entire life. The son of jazz drummer Benny Anello, music was in his blood from the very beginning.
As a pre-teen, Doc fell deeply in love with jazz. By the age of 16 he had already formed his first band, the Paradise Serenaders, demonstrating the entrepreneurial spirit and musical leadership that would define his career for the next seven decades.
Doc earned a doctorate in jazz education — the credential that gave him his lifelong nickname. He went on to lead big bands and small groups throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and beyond, becoming one of the most respected bandleaders on the East Coast before relocating to California.
Over the years, Doc backed an extraordinary roster of performers in jazz and popular music, including Johnny Mathis, Gregory Hines, Frankie Avalon, Rip Taylor, Totie Fields, Johnny Ray, Leslie Gore, Eartha Kitt, and many others. His versatility as a singer, arranger, and saxophonist made him an invaluable collaborator.
In 1968, Doc Anello moved to California, bringing his talent and energy to the West Coast music scene. In 1975, he became manager of booking for Disneyland — a role that placed his music and artistry at the center of one of the world's most beloved entertainment destinations for years to come.
Doc is the father of jazz guitarist and Cexton Records founder John Anello Jr., continuing a family legacy of musical excellence that spans three generations.
Doc Anello passed away on May 14, 2017, leaving behind a rich catalog of recordings, countless memories for those who saw him perform, and a family legacy that continues to honor the art of swing.
